Dead zone.
Mendocino Bull Kelp

A spontaneous series of events lead me to weave a basket utilizing bull kelp.
As I collected kelp from the beaches of Mendocino County, California, I reflected on the “dead zone” just off the coastline.  As a keystone species, kelp is essential to the existence of many ecosystems on the planet.   Throughout the collecting, reconstituting and weaving process, I ruminated on the disconnection we have to our innate interconnectedness with nature.
The final image from this process series (above) is a representation of humanity’s uprootedness and longing for our return to the salt of the sea.
